Phishing Site Example

The following screenshot shows a typical phishing web site.

  • The site uses authentic-looking logos and font and color schemes that could be used by the real web site.
  • The title of the page, "Random Account Verification," sounds legitimate, although users should view such titles with suspicion.
  • The tabs at the top, the logon and help links, the privacy link, and other page elements help legitimize the site, especially the "Secure Verification" label at the top right.
  • In this example, the URL is not disguised. The fact that an IP address is used instead of a text URL should arouse suspicion. However, such suspicion only occurs if you are aware that this is a characteristic of a fraud site.
